The following is a review of all families that we have been able to trace that descended from Doaghbeg.  Lack of records mean we only have information from the early 1800s while we have used census records, land records and birth/marriage/death records to determine those with Doaghbeg descent.  A huge effort has gone into this and while we have made every effort to be as concise as possible, there will be errors or missing information along the way.  We hope that our followers can help us out in this regard.

If you notice anything that needs added/changed, please get in touch.  If you see information that you feel is not relevant or would like to have removed, just let us know and we will accommodate your request.  We have not included many of the current generation of Doaghbeg people for privacy reasons - we've tried to not include anyone born after 1980.  Any other family information or names contained below was found using online sources (obituaries or marriage articles in media, family trees online etc) however if anyone would like information removed, please get in touch.

We want to keep the overview as simple as possible while also remembering the people/family.

We have ordered the families as they appeared in the Griffiths Valuation lists.  A lot of these details are 'educated estimates' so please do not consider them as full facts.

'James' &

'Charlie' McAteers

Photos above include Plots 7 and 1 that the James McAteer connection owned in 1854.  Plot 1 (third photo) was transferred to the Martins sometime in the 1860s.

Although James McAteer owned this land in 1854, Charles McAteer who then occupied it from 1863 onwards, may not have been a relation.  We believe that Charles was an uncle of John Roe McAteer and more info on this can be found on the John Roe/Eoin Bhig section.

Confidence is low on the older generation here so we are open to correction.  We have included what we know about James who occupied it prior to 1863.

1834 Tithe Applotment?: Unsure - there is a 'Jas Mcintire' though.

1854 Griffiths Valuation Plot Number: 1 & 7. James McAteer Junior & Senior

1901 Census House Number: 9 (Charles McAteer family)

1911 Census House Number: 16 (Charles McAteer family)

Some Current Doaghbeg Descendants of Charles McAteer: Jimmy 'Biddy' Sweeney (Araheera). Durnings (Creeslough).  Jimmy is a descendant of Charles McAteer who obtained the land, we are not sure if James who originally owned it was a relation of Charles.

Some Current Doaghbeg Descendants of James McAteer: Not sure - we need to further investigate this family line.  Some maintain that James was Charles' father but we have no evidence.

Earliest Ancestor:

There was an eviction of Plot.1 that James McAteer Junior owned.  On the plot were his mother Mary, brothers William & Charles, and cousins James, Anne, Daniel & Francis. Hoping for transparency with this connection soon.

James McAteer c.1802-1878.  Died in Doaghbeg in presence of Mary McAteer.  We think this may be the James Senior that owned Plot 7.  There was also a James McAteer that died in 1862 which may be him too.

We think James Senior was married to Mary Callaghan c.1818-1864.

Mary died in Doaghbeg in presence of daughter Bridget McAteer, wife of James was written on the death cert.

Mary's mother may have been Bridget Callaghan (c. 1793-1870). She died in Doaghbeg in presence of James McAteer.

All estimates, difficult o confirm.

Children of James and Mary McAteer

Based on the 1861 evictions, we have figured that these are the children of James and Mary.

1. Francis McAteer (1851-1865). No info.

2. William McAteer (1853-1869). No info.

3. Bridget McAteer (?-?). No info.

4. James McAteer (?-?). No info.

There may be more.  Confidence is low on this family, very hard to decipher.

*******************************************************************************************************

Here is the information of Charles McAteer who obtained the land in 1863 and his descendants who lived there to recent years.  By our records he was a descendant of Billy Eoin Bhig McAteer (his second marriage)

1. Charles McAteer (c.1838-1908).

Charles married to Mary Friel (c.1837-1912) in 1855 in the presence of Catherine Sweeney.

Charles died in presence of son James McAteer, his death record had him at 85 (unreliable source for age). Census records also contradict his age.

Mary died in presence of son James McAteer, her death record had her at 75.

Interesting in their family line, their first and last child were called Hannah.  Hannah Moss was born in 1858 and died on March 26th 1879, while her sister Hannah was born exactly one year later on March 26th 1880.

Charles and Mary had 11 children;

1. Hannah Moss (1856-1879).

Godparents; John McAteer & Margaret Sweeny

2. Bridget Sweeney/McAteer (1858-1939).

Godparents; Francis Sweeny & Anne Freel

May have married John Sweeney, Ballinacrick in 1877 - not confident on this though.  A Bridget McAteer from Doaghbeg with father called Charles married John, and no other Bridgets fit the bill.

Married James Sweeney (1857-1895), Araheera in 1886 in presence of John Sweeney & Mary Carr.

Married Patrick McAteer (1871-?), Doaghbeg (the Charlie Frinks) in 1897 in presence of James Coll & Sarah Sweeney.

They had 6 children;

Photos above include the house James Sweeney (1866-1934) resided in along with the plot of land Ellen owned in 1854.

1834 Tithe Applotment?: 'Jas Sweeney' on the list for Doaghbeg.

1854 Griffiths Valuation Plot Number: 2 - Ellen Sweeny

1901 Census House Number: 2

1911 Census House Number: 26

Some Current Doaghbeg Descendants: Eddie Sweeney, Bried Sweeney, Bernard McGlinchey.

Earliest Ancestor:

James Sweeney 1800-1854.

James was married to Ellen Sweeney ?-1864 (may have been Doherty).

Possible siblings of James;

1. Edward Sweeney 1802-1884. This is an estimate based on DNA matches with Sweeney ancestors in the USA.

2. Catherine Kelly c. 1805-1873.  Married Patrick Kelly, Pollaid.  The reason for this is that a daughter of Patrick Sweeney (c. 1825-1909) called Ellen Sweeney died in presence of her cousin Katie Kelly from Pollaid.  Katie was a granddaughter of Catherine Kelly.  This is an estimate.  Details on this family can be found under the 'John Kelly/Gileys/Caithairs' review.

We do not have any information on James' parents or any other potential siblings.

Patrick married Bridget Coll (c.1841-1922) from Pollaid on February 28th 1865 in the presence of Manus McLaughlin and Catherine Sweeney.

Bridget's parents were Daniel Coll and Mary Gavaghan/McGavigan/Gavin/McGavern (1812-1892).

Mary McGavigan's mother was Ellen McGavigan (1787-1867). As you can see there are several variants of the McGavigan name. We believe Mary had two brothers - William (1833-1893) & John McGavigan (1821-1903).

Patrick's death was reported by his son James and cause of death was senile decay.

Bridget died from suspected cardiac arrest and her death was reported by son James.

1. James Sweeney (1866-1934).

They had four children.

James died in 1934 from suspected cardiac failure and his death was reported by his son John 'Jimmy' Sweeney.

2. Julia McMackin (nee Sweeney) (1835-1909).

New evidence may suggest Patrick had a sister Julia who moved to Lawrence, Ohio and married Jackson McMackin (1830-1898).

Jackson and Julia had the following children;

  • John McMackin (1855-?)

  • Hugh F McMackin (1858-1940). Married Catherine Durkin (1871-1935). Died in Pittsburgh.

4. Mary Duffy (nee Sweeney) (1838-1907).

We received contact from a Dennis Higgins in May 2020 to inform us he was a descendant of Mary Sweeney - sister of Patrick and daughter of James & Ellen. Dennis researched DNA results to make the connection. What we have so far is that Mary married William Duffy in 1859 in Fanad in presence of Anne Gallagher.

William was either from Doaghbeg or Ballyheerin and died in Chester, Pennsylvania. His father is listed as Bryan Duffy while his mother was Sarah Dorrian from Toame.

Mary and William had the following children;

  • James Duffy (1861-?). Born in Ballyheerin.  Godparents were James Friel & Seamus Sweeney.

  • John J Duffy (1863-1908). Born in Ballyheerin. Great Grandfather of Dennis Higgins. Daughter;

Owen Kellys

Review OwenKellys.JPG

1834 Tithe Applotment?: There were two Owen Kellys on this list.

1854 Griffiths Valuation Plot Number: 3 - Owen Kelly

1901 Census House Number: 3 - McAteers (Descendants of Owen)

1911 Census House Number: 18 - McAteers (Descendants of Owen)

Some Current Doaghbeg Descendants: Denis O'Brien

Earliest Ancestor:

Owen Kelly (?-?).  No real information on Owen other than the Tithe and Griffiths records.  He died sometime after 1869 as he was present at his daughter Bridget's death that year.

Wife could have been a 'Sarah Kelly' who died in 1857 - guess.

Limited enough information on this family.  No birth or marriage records seem to exist and I can't locate one for Owen's death either.

Children of Owen Kelly

1. Sarah McAteer (c.1845-1894).

2. Neil Kelly (c.1845-1869).

3. Bridget Kelly (c.1849-1869).

There may be more.

Married Patrick McAteer (1850-1937), Doaghbeg. He was one of the Charlie Frinks who lived opposite O 'Doherty's shop and they will have a review on this site too.  No marriage record.

They had 4 children;

1. Anne McAteer (1875-?).

Godparents; Donal Martin & Susan McTeer

2. Susan McAteer (1878-1923).

Godparents; Hugh Carr & Susan McTeer

Died in Doaghbeg in presence of brother Francis.

Whoriskeys

Review Whoriskeys.JPG
Review Whoriskeys 2.JPG

Photos above are the plot and location of the Whoriskey homestead that Johnny and his father Briney occupied. Originally owned by Mary Martin, who moved to Plot 1 in the 1860s and may have been related to the Whoriskeys.

1834 Tithe Applotment?: No Whoriskeys on the list.

1854 Griffiths Valuation Plot Number: 4c - Denis Whoriskey - not sure if he was related to Briney/Johnny etc.

1901 Census House Number: 12

1911 Census House Number: 23

Some Current Doaghbeg Descendants: N/A.  Family appears to have died out.  We have suspicion they were related to the John Roes as Denis Whoriskey was leasing land from William McAteer in 1854, while Ellen was a boarder with the Richardsons (direct John Roe descendants) in 1911 and Bernard was a servant for the John Roe household.

The Whoriskeys information is quite scattered.  We have one definitive line but have limited to no information on the other Whoriskeys in the area and if they were connected to Brian Whoriskey or not.  We will include them all here to be sure.

The variation of the spelling of Whoriskey makes record finding incredibly difficult too.

Earliest Ancestor:

Denis Whoriskey - on the Griffiths Valuation in 1854.  No birth or death records.

Anne Horiskey - died in 1861.

Brian Whoriskey - died before 1868 as he was listed as deceased when his son Briney got married for the first time.  Maybe Brian & Denis are the same person.

Hannah Cullen (nee Whoriskey, died before 1884).  Was married to Daniel Cullen who may have Doaghbeg links and died in Carrowblagh in 1885.  Not sure of Doaghbeg link here but including it just in case.

Dora Whoriskey - died in 1888 aged 76, in presence of Margaret Richardson (further adding to suspicion that they were related to the John Roes).  She was a widower, potential mother of Briney??

Catherine Whoriskey - boarder with the John Roes in 1901.  Died the same year aged 50.

Bridget Toland (nee Whoriskey, c.1821-1908).  Mother in law of Charlie 'Una' McAteer (1851-1932).  Married to James Toland.  Not sure if there's a Doaghbeg link here.

Ellen Whoriskey - boarder with the Richardsons in 1911.  Aged 88 in 1911.

Children of Bryan Whoriskey

1. Bryan Whoriskey (c.1838-1933).

There may be more.

The family were also known as 'Caldwell' occasionally.

1. Bryan Whoriskey (c.1838-1933).

Married three times to;

Hannah Sweeney (c.1824-1889).  Hannah was a daughter of Edward Sweeney, Doaghbeg.  Married in 1868 in presence of Mary Sweeney and James Martin.  Hannah died in Doaghbeg in presence of husband Bryan.  They had one child;

  • Catherine Whoriskey (1869-1896).  Died in Doaghbeg in presence of father Bryan.

Bridget Gavaghan (1853-1892).  Bridget was a daughter of William Gavaghan (c.1833-1893), Pollaid.  Married in 1889 (a few weeks after Hannah's passing) in presence of William McAteer & John McAteer.  Bridget died in Doaghbeg in presence of husband Bryan.  They had two children;

  • Mary (Sister Ephraim) (1890-?).  Became a nun.

  • Bernard (1892-1971).  Emigrated in 1913, fought in WW1 and married Bertha Heim (1901-1988).

Kate Grant (c.1840-1922).  Widower when she married Bryan in 1893 in presence of Patrick McConegly & Susan Grant.  She was from Croaghross, father listed as Michael Grant.  Strangely Bryan's father is listed as 'James' on the wedding certificate.  She died in Doaghbeg in presence of son Johnny.  They had one child;

  • Johnny (1895-1990).  Never married.

John Roe McAteers

JRWinifred4.JPG
JR1.JPG
JR2.JPG
JR3.JPG
JR4.JPG
JR5.JPG
JR6.JPG

First photo above shows the plot Winifred McAteer owned.  Not sure who she was.  The other photos contain all the other land that William McAteer owned in 1854 and is still in John Roe descendant hands.

1834 Tithe Applotment?: May be Wm McIntyre.

1854 Griffiths Valuation Plot Number: Plot 4 was owned by Winifred McAteer - not sure who she is but this is land that was owned by John Roes after.

Plot 5 was owned by William McAteer, John Roe's father.

1901 Census House Number: 5, 6 (Richardson),

1911 Census House Number: 17 (Richardson), 19.

Some Current Doaghbeg Descendants: Tom McIntyre, Rosaleen Carr, Ignatius McIntyre, Denis O'Brien, John Richardson (Carlingford, RIP), Charlie Kelly (RIP), Eunan Sweeney, current 'John Roes', Dymphna McAteer, McGonigles (Rosnakill)

The John Roes are well known in the area and have a large connection.

We also added a section to the site relating to the earliest ancestors we found that came from Doaghbeg.  Descendants of this McIntire family have DNA matches to current Doaghbeg McAteer ancestors, meaning the John McIntire that left in 1807 was related to John Roe's father William.

Earliest Ancestor:

William McAteer (c.1797-1874).  This is John Roe's father.  He died in presence of John McAteer in Doaghbeg. Not sure who he was married to.

William was also known as Billy and his father was Eoin Bhig McAteer.  We have a section on the Eoin Bhigs too.

It is estimated that Eoin Bhig had three children;

1) William (Billy) - family details on this review.

2) John (Eoini) - Plot 22a.  Some family information contained under the John McAteer / Barracks review.

3) Charles - first review on this page.  It is estimated Charles was born from Eoin Bhig's second marriage.

First two phots are of the Plot that James Deeney owned in 1854.

Third and fourth photos are of the Plot that Edward Deeney owned in 1854, later owned by John Joe O'Brien.

1834 Tithe Applotment?: Edward & Michael Deeney appear separately

The Deeney connection is difficult to piece together.  May be related in some way to the Paddy Nelly Sweeneys.  Daniel Deeney was present at James 'Paddy Nelly''s wedding and Paddy himself reported John Deeney's death.

In a court case between Daniel Coll and Daniel the Tailor, it was alleged they were related, we believe this is through the Deeney connection.

There was also a Deeney connection in Clementstown.

First photo is of the plot that John Kelly owned in 1854.

Second photo is of Giley's cottage

Third and Fourth photos are of Jim and Rose McIntyre's cottage and then Johnny and Rosie Kelly's cottage, both on the original John Kelly land.

1834 Tithe Applotment?: There were two Owen Kellys on the list

1854 Griffiths Valuation Plot Number: 8 - John Kelly

1901 Census House Number: 7, 20 (Joseph Kelly)

1911 Census House Number: 3 (Joseph Kelly), 15.

Some Current Doaghbeg Descendants: Unknown - family seems to have died out in the local area.

This Kelly family had connections in Pollaid but some of the information here is estimated.   Lack of records make it difficult to piece together.  The more recent generation is all correct, their ancestors may have inaccuracies.

Earliest Ancestors (estimated):

Patrick Kelly (c. 1795-1875), Pollaid.

Married to Catherine Sweeney (c. 1805-1873).  Catherine may have been a sister of Paddy Nelly Sweeney, Doaghbeg.

Both Catherine and Patrick died in Pollaid.

Children of Patrick & Catherine

1. John Kelly (c.1820-1906).

2. Catherine Kelly (c. 1822-1913).

3. Edward Kelly (c. 1831-1916)

4. Ellen Kelly (c. 1839-1870).     estimate as an Ellen Kelly died in Doaghbeg, reported by John Kelly.

5. Patrick Kelly (1847-?)

6. Mary McAteer (1851-1901)

There may be more.  As you can see there is a big discrepancy between the ages of these children hence our low confidence of the accuracy here.  We also have to take into account that ages were exaggerated on census and death records a lot of the time.

Morgans 2.JPG
Murrachus.JPG

The first three photos are of the land John Sweeney senior owned in 1854.  This land was transferred to Daniel Mhor Coll in the early 1900s and then to the 'Pat' Coll connection after that.

The fourth photo is of the land that John Sweeney junior owned in 1854.  This was Patrick Johndy's father.

The fifth and sixth photos are roughly where Morgan Sweeney owned the plot of land in 1854 (14b).

The last photo is the plot Murrogh McSwyne owned in 1854 (Plot 30)

It was difficult to get an accurate photo of all plots as they are situated in awkward places and span across different height levels.

1834 Tithe Applotment?:  Potential names related to this family;

Chas Sweeny (Murroghy),  Murroghy Sweeny, Owen Sweeny

1854 Griffiths Valuation Plot Number: 9 - John Sweeny, Senior &

24 John Sweeny, Junior.  This would indicate father and son.

14b - Morgan Sweeney

30 - Murrough McSwyne

1901 Census House Number: 28

1911 Census House Number: 29

Some Current Doaghbeg Descendants: Tony Sweeney (possibly).

This Sweeney connection here is another difficult one to decipher.  The more recent generation are correct whereby records are readily available but a lot is estimation and guesswork the further back we go.  We have bundled the Johndys and Murrachus here as we believe they may be related.

Earliest Ancestors (estimated):

Owen Sweeney, died in 1861.  Owen was married to Rose Sweeney (c. 1801-1886).  There are several records of Rose visiting Milford Workhouse.  She also died there.  There was also a court case involving both Owen and Rose from the mid 1800s which appears on this site.

We are not sure who either Owen or Rose's parents were due to lack of records.

Owen may have been a brother of Morgan/Murrachu Sweeney.  Murrachu married Mary 'Mhor' Sweeney (c.1823-1892).  They had 10 children and all appear under the 'Mhor' Sweeneys review.  There is a large connection under the Murrachu family.

Maery Martin 1.JPG
Mary Martin 2.JPG
Mary Martin 3.JPG
Mary Martin 4.JPG

The first photo above is the plot Mary Martin owned in 1854.
The next three are the plot the Martins moved to sometime in the 1860s, Plot 1 as per Griffiths Valuation after James McAteer was evicted.  The third photo is the old homesteads while the fourth is the current house that stands there that was built by Mickey Martin in the 1930s or so.

There were so many Martins in the area that it is difficult to piece them together.

1834 Tithe Applotment?:  There is a Michl Martin on the list

1854 Griffiths Valuation Plot Number: 11 - Mary Martin (wife of Michael).  They then moved to Plot 1 in the 1860s.

Nola McAteers

Nola land 1.JPG
Nola land 2.JPG
Nola land 3.JPG
Noal house.JPG

The above photos are of the Nola McAteer plots.  The 1854 Griffiths Valuation seems to have mixed up the Duffy and Nolas plots, unless they changed after 1854.

1834 Tithe Applotment?:  Possibly Neal McIntire?

1854 Griffiths Valuation Plot Number: 12A - Nola McAteer.  Although their land as we knew it in more recent times was listed on plot 12B on the maps, may be an error.  12B is the Duffy land as we knew it in recent times.

1901 Census House Number: 17

1911 Census House Number: 13

Some Current Doaghbeg Descendants: Bried Sweeney,

Not much information on the older Nola generation.  We aren't sure if they were related to any of the other McAteers (Charlies, John Roes, Charlie Frinks etc)

Earliest Ancestors:

Nola McAteer.  No death record available.  Since Patrick was on his plot of land in 1901, we assume he is a son of Nola.

Children of Nola

1. Patrick McAteer (c. 1840-1922)

Married Margaret McBride (1846-1907) from Melmore, Downings.  No marriage record.

Patrick died in Doaghbeg, a widower farmer in presence of cousin James P Sweeney, Cardiac failure and senile decay.

Margaret died in 1907 from Bronchitis in Doaghbeg in presence of son Patrick.

The cousin James P Sweeney is interesting - the only James P Sweeney recorded in Doaghbeg is Jimmy Paddy Nelly Sweeney.  We are unable to make the connection though.

They had 6 children;

1. James Paddy Nola McAteer (1879-1958)

Godparents: Charles Sweeny & Winifred Sweeny

Was in Melmore for both the 1901 and 1911 census.

Was naturalized in America in 1925 - record available.  Cousin Jack Herrity.

One daughter;

  • Maggie Ann McAteer (1907-1992).  Emigrated to America in 1929.  Made a Life Claim in 1973 in Philadelphia.  Died there too.

4. Patrick McAteer (1883-1919)

Mary died in Doaghbeg in presence of son Thomas P McAteer.

Duffys

Duffy land.JPG
Duffy house.JPG
Duffy outhouse.JPG

The above photos are of the Duffy plot in 1854 and the most recent homestead and outhouses.  As mentioned before, we believe the Griffiths valuation as the Duffy and Nola plots mixed up, unless they changed after 1854 which is doubtful.

1834 Tithe Applotment?:  Hugh Duffy, Mary Duffy, Bryan Duffy.

1854 Griffiths Valuation Plot Number: 12B - Mary Duffy.  Although their land as we knew it in more recent times was listed on plot 12A on the maps, may be an error.  12A is the Duffy land as we knew it in recent times.

1901 Census House Number: 18

1911 Census House Number: 24

Some Current Doaghbeg Descendants: Ignatius McIntyre, 'Pat' Colls.

There were a few Duffys in the area but as is common, it's difficult to make connections between them due to lack of actual records.

Earliest Ancestors:

Hugh Duffy (?-?)

Appeared on the Tithe list.  No death record.

His daughter Margaret (c. 1836-1876) married Morgan Sweeney in 1865 in the presence of James Martin & Anna Martin.

Their family details is contained under the 'Johndy/Murrachu' Sweeney section.

We assume that based on the below Daniel Duffy christening his first son as Hugh, that Hugh (above) was father of Daniel (below).

If this is correct, then Hugh and Mary were husband and wife.

Daniel Duffy (c. 1837-1887).

We assume Mary Duffy from the Griffiths Valuation was Daniel's mother.  No death record for her.

Other Duffys

John Duffy (c. 1824-1896).

Married to Bridget Toland.

There was a John Duffy from Doaghbeg who died in Letterkenny Asylum in 1896, in presence of Thomas Wilkin.  John was listed as a married farmer.

Children;

1) Bridget Duffy (1847-?).

Godparents; John Deeny & Mary Sweeny

2) Michael Duffy (1854-?)

Godparents; Darby Kelly & Rose Tolan

Bryan Duffy (?-?)

Appeared on the Tithe list.  No death record.

Bryan Duffy from Ballyhiernan had a son called Bernard who married Catherine 'Murrachu' Sweeney in 1865.  Potential link here.

We cannot be sure if these Duffys above were related to each other.

Children of Hugh and Mary Duffy

1. Daniel Duffy (c. 1837-1887).

Married Bridget Martin (c. 1851-1907) in 1861 in presence of Sarah Martin.  Fathers weren't listed on this marriage record.  We believe Bridget's father may have been a Charles Martin and that she was a sister of Anne McAteer (nee Martin, 1845-1898) who was married to Francis McAteer (1813-1869) in Plot 14a.  Their family review falls under the 'Charlie Frink' McAteer review.   This would have made Daniel Duffy (1901-1981) a second cousin of Francie 'Charlie' McAteer (1876-1954) if our estimations are correct.  Daniel did inherit the land from Francis after Francis passed away so this could make sense.

Daniel died in Doaghbeg in presence of daughter Annie.

Bridget died in Doaghbeg in presence of son Charles.

They had 6 children;

1. Hugh Duffy (1862-?)

Birth record states Mary Martin was his mother but this must be an error.

The two photos above are some of the plot that Edward Sweeney owned in 1854.  The plot extended back further but it is difficult to get a photo of the entire plot from the ground.

McAteers

(Charlie Frinks)

Francis Mcateers.JPG

The above photo is of Plot 14a that Francis McAteer would have owned in 1854.

1834 Tithe Applotment?:  Possibly Wm McIntire

1854 Griffiths Valuation Plot Number: 14a - Francis McAteer

1901 Census House Number: 14

1911 Census House Number: 22

Some Current Doaghbeg Descendants: Denis O'Brien, Mary McFadden (John William, Milford)

As with all McAteer families, the further we go back the harder it is to link them with other McAteers.  We are confident with the information here though.

Earliest Ancestors:

William McAteer (c. 1787-1853).  His granddaughter Annie Kenny applied for a pension in 1921 and referenced her father Francis and grandfather William McAteer as appearing in the 1851 census.  In the record it states William was 64 in 1851.

We have no record as to who William's wife was.

A William McAteer died in Doaghbeg on 15th January 1853 - assuming it is this William.

Children of William McAteer

1. Francis McAteer (c. 1813-1869)

There may be more

Married to Anne Martin.  No marriage record.

We assume this is Anne's death record (age would appear to be way off if correct)

Nancy McAteer (c. 1845-1898)

Widower, died in presence of son, Charles McAteer, Doaghbeg.

Francis died in Doaghbeg in presence of occupier Charles McAteer.

Francis and Anne had the following children;

1. Susan McAteer (c. 1841-?)    estimate

We are basing this on the fact that locals state the Charlie Franks and Paddy Rosies were related, while Denis O'Brien's mother was also known to be related to Charlie 'Rosie' McAteer.  We assume this is through Susan.  The name Susan is also used in the Charlie Frink connection occasionally.

Married Patrick 'Rosie' McAteer (c.1831-1902).  No marriage record.

Patrick died in Doaghbeg.

Susan may have emigrated after his death.

They had 11 children;

The first photo shows Plot 15 owned by Margaret Gallagher in 1854, she owned the right part of the field while Margaret Martin owned the left hand side.

The next three photos are of the Plot owned by Patrick Gallagher, including some of the land and the house (that was then owned by Patrick Johndy Sweeney, then the Maher family, and then transferred to Moira Griffin in recent years).

The Gallagher family died out in the area in the late 1800s and it's difficult to link them together.  We will just list them below and document the relationship where possible.

There was also no death record for Margaret available which further adds to the confusion.

This Margaret is most likely the same Margaret from Plot 28.

James McAteer

(James)

James James 1.JPG
James James 2.JPG
James James 3.JPG

James was listed as owner of Plot 20 in the valuation list.  This plot transferred to Michael Kenny sometime after.  We are still trying to figure out who James McAteer was.

1834 Tithe Applotment?:  There is a Jas McIntire on the list

1854 Griffiths Valuation Plot Number: 20 - James McAteer (James).  Indicating he is a son of James.

1901 Census House Number: TBC

1911 Census House Number: TBC

Some Current Doaghbeg Descendants: TBC

We are still researching this person.  As stated, Michael Kenny bought the land here but we are trying to figure out who James was.  He could have been related to John/Owen McAteer (Charlie Unas) who owned the plot next to him.

A James McAteer died in 1861 - this is most likely him.  No death record details available though.

The above photos are of the Plot owned by Charles Kelly in 1854.  It spanned from the 'old road' right across the 'new road' to where the school currently sits.  Indeed it was Charles 'The Tailor' Kelly who gave this land in order for the school to be built.

1834 Tithe Applotment?:  The Charles Kelly we have records on would have been too young for the 1834 Tithe list.  There was a Chas Kelly there though, along with two Owen Kellys and an Edward Kelly.

1854 Griffiths Valuation Plot Number: 21 - Charles Kelly

1901 Census House Number: 29

The last photo shows the wall steads of the barracks which are still standing.

John Eoini's father Billy was married twice, first to a Friel woman and then to a Carr woman.

1834 Tithe Applotment?:  Owen McIntire Senior & Junior appear on the list.  We believe he may be Junior.

1854 Griffiths Valuation Plot Number: 22 - a) John McAteer.  b) Police Barracks & Yard.  c)  Unoccupied.

1901 Census House Number: John McAteer - family moved away it appears.  Barracks - 30 & 31.

1911 Census House Number: John McAteer - family moved away it appears.  Barracks - 32

Some Current Doaghbeg Descendants: Of John 'Eoini' McAteer - Eunan Sweeney.

Eoin Bhig McAteer

Apparently he had three children;

1. Eoini Junior McAteer (Doney)

Eoini's daughter Sarah/Sally (c. 1831-190?) married John 'Mhor' Sweeney (c. 1820-1902). Their family review is on this website.

Eoini's son Patrick was evicted in the 1850s.

2. William McAteer (John Roe's father, review already on this page)

3. Charles McAteer (Tearlach) (first family review on this page).

This family review is quite confusing and inconclusive but land transfer records may help.

Earliest Ancestors:

Owen/John McAteer (?-possibly 1857).

There was a death record for a John McAteer in 1857 (could have been his father, his son or himself), no other details.  John was definitely dead before his son Charles' marriage in 1882 as he was listed as deceased on this marriage record.

We can assume John's father was also John, based on the Tithe records.

John junior married Uney Sweeney (c. 1838-1901) in 1850 in presence of Honora McAteer.

Not sure which Sweeney family she was from.

Uney died in Doaghbeg in presence of son Charles.

Margaret &

Donnell Martins

D and M  martin1 .JPG
D and M  martin.JPG

The above photos are of the Plots owned by Margaret & Donnell Martin in 1854.  This land went across the 'new road' and was an oddly shaped plot of land right on the Drumnacraig border.

This family are a bit of a mystery and were hard to research due to lack of records so a lot of their lineage is estimated.  We have very low confidence with some of the information.

Margaret is most likely the same Margaret that we already have no information on, who owned Plot 16 (listed above).  We assume this as this land (16 & 28) is owned by the same person now.

We believe Daniel may have been related to John Martin from Pollaid as Daniel's children were born there.

1834 Tithe Applotment?:  There is a Danl Martin - not sure if he is related to this Daniel.

1854 Griffiths Valuation Plot Number: 28a - Margaret Martin.  28b - Donnell Martin.

1901 Census House Number: 23

1911 Census House Number: 8

Some Current Doaghbeg Descendants: Unknown - maybe the 'Diver Friels', Pollaid.

Earliest Ancestors:

Margaret Martin (?-?).  No death record but owned Plots 16 and 28a in the Griffiths records.

Donnell Martin (?-?) - may be father of the Daniel who lived in Doaghbeg in the 1901 & 1911 census.

If related to Pollaid Martins, here's some info we have on Pollaid Martins;

Michael & Mary Martin

Mary Martin (c. 1804-1874).  Died in Pollaid in presence of Michael Martin.  Farmer's wife.

Michael Martin (c. 1801-1881).  Died in Pollaid in presence of John Friel.  Widower.

Anna Martin (c. 1808-1879).  Died in Pollaid in presence of son John.

Daniel Martin (c. 1841-?) & Nancy Campbell (c. 1843-1909)

(House 23 in 1901 & House 8 in 1911 census records)

Nancy died in Doaghbeg.  We believe she was a daughter of a John Campbell.

We believe this Daniel was related to the Donnell & Margaret Martin from the Valuation Records given their location for the census matches that of Donnell & Margaret.

No marriage record for Daniel & Nancy.

Another potential Martin link;

Hugh Martin (c. 1844-1867) & Ann McBride (c. 1843-1893)

Married in 1864 in presence of James McBride & Anne Kelly.

Hugh was a son of Daniel Martin (c. 1792-1866).  Daniel died in presence of son Hugh Martin Doaghbeg.

Hugh died in Doaghbeg in presence of Sarah McBride.  Aged 24.

Ann then married a Patrick Sweeney, Doaghbeg, in 1875 in Massmount.  Patrick was a son of Charles Sweeney.  Not sure who they were, maybe Drumnacraig Sweeneys.

Ann died in Doaghbeg, death reported by son James Martin.

Hugh & Ann Martin's child;

  • James Martin (1866-?)

Annie Callaghan

Campbells and Callaghans.JPG

1854 Griffiths Valuation Plot Number: N/A - no Callaghans in Doaghbeg

1901 Census House Number: 24

1911 Census House Number: 31

Some Current Doaghbeg Descendants: Unknown

Annie Callaghan (c. 1840-?)

Annie appears in both censuses.  Listed as a shopkeeper and a widow.

We cannot locate who her husband may have been or any children she may have had.

There was a Mary Callaghan who married Daniel Martin in 1898, both from Doaghbeg.  Daniel lived right beside where Annie Callaghan did, so Mary may have been a daughter of Annie.

It listed Annie's father as Patrick.

They could have been related to the Drumnacraig Callaghans who lived just up the road from them.

Francis Sweeney stated the location of his newly built house is where Annie Callaghan lived which is to the right of the above photo.

Campbells

Campbells and Callaghans.JPG
Cambells1.JPG

The above photos show the location of the Campbells during the 1901 and 1911 census (right on the Drumnacraig border) along with the house they bought that used to belong to the Kennys, we assume sometime in the 1920s.

The last of the Doaghbeg Campbells died there, while John Jimmy Sweeney and his family lived here for a while.

1854 Griffiths Valuation Plot Number: N/A - no Campbells in Doaghbeg

1901 Census House Number: House 3 Drumnacraig;

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Donegal/Fanad_North/Drumnacraig/1191404/

1911 Census House Number: 6

Some Current Doaghbeg Descendants: Campbell descendants still in touch with Doaghbeg roots

It appears they may have had some connection with Pollaid and the Martin family (Michael).

Earliest Ancestor

John Campbell (c. 1844-1902).

May have been born in Pollaid.

Married Ellen Sweeney (c. 1838-1923), Ascrummy in 1868 in presence of John Martin & Mary Kelly.

Ellen was a daughter of Daniel Sweeney.

The witnesses further add to the speculation of the relationship to the Martins while John's residence is listed as Pollaid.

His father John was married to Mary Kelly.  It is very possible that Mary was one of the Kellys from Patrick Kelly's Plot 29 in Doaghbeg (family review above) in the 1854 Griffiths Valuation, it would explain how the Campbells ended up in Doaghbeg.  Apparently John Senior was a protestant man employed by the English Government to ensure the Irish paid their taxes.

No death records for Mary or John yet.

John Junior had the following siblings;

  • Mary Campbell (1851-?).  Godparents: Michael Keer & Catherine Keer

  • Michael Campbell (1855-?).  Godparents: John McGinly & Mary Kelly
