We have dedicated a portion of our site to people we simply cannot track down and are hoping our visitors may be able to shed some light into who they were or where they may have went.

We've also included records of people who we are unable to trace to Doaghbeg people and we hope someone may be able to help.

If you review the 'Family Overview' section and see question marks beside anyone, please get in touch as they more than qualify to be listed here too.

In our 'Doaghbeg Family Overview' section - anyone with a '?' beside their name or their year of birth/death qualifies for this section.

So if you see a person or family that has missing or incorrect information, please get in touch.

McLaughlin/McLoughlin

McLaughlin was not a common name in Doaghbeg.

Manus McLaughlin was present at the wedding of Patrick Sweeney (father James) and Bridget Coll (father Daniel, Pollaid) on 28th February 1865.

We haven't been able to find anything on Manus so he either passed away without having a death certificate registered or emigrated.

There was a Pat McLoughlin who was listed in the 1834 Tithe Applotment Books as having land in Doaghbeg, so there may be a connection there.

Cullen/Cullion Family

We have a small review of any Cullens from the area on this site.

We would love to hear about this family as we have very little information.

Martin family

We are looking for information on a Martin family;

Charles Martin married Margaret Duffy on March 2nd 1854.  Cecelia Martin was present at the wedding.

They had two children registered;

1. John, baptised 18th February 1855. Godparents were John McAteer and Susan Price.

2. Mary, baptised 27th December 1857. Godparents were Francis McAteer and Susan Green.

What is also strange is there was another Charles Martin from Doaghbeg who married Susan Price in 1847. They left Ireland in 1867 with their children. This Susan Price could be the same Susan Price who was Godmother of John.
John was also listed in Milford Workhouse in July 1867 with a fever, and was listed as an orphan.

Una McAteers

There is a family review on the Una McAteers, we are looking for any information on their family as we have limited information.

Daniel Coll

Known as Daniel 'Padraig'.  Born November 20th 1882 in Pollaid to Patrick Coll (1851-1924) and Annie 'Frank' McConagly (Ballinacrick, 1854-1942).

Was in the 1901 census for Pollaid but then left for, we believe, Scotland.

Info from his relation Gerard Coll;

He went to Scotland probably sometime in the 1900's. His brother John Coll visited him in Scotland, we don't know where, before John got married, which would have been 1920/21. Nothing further is know about Daniel and it looks like he never came back to Pollaid.

Catherine McAteer (c.1840-1910)

Catherine married John McConigley from Corry.  We are told she was a Doaghbeg woman but since there is no marriage record available, we can't be sure which McAteer she is.

Catherine and John had a son called James (1876-1944).  He married Winnie Gibbons.  Among their children were Katie and Celia McConigley who still live in Corry (Oct 2020).  It was Katie and Celia who stated that Catherine was a Doaghbeg person but we haven't been able to verify.

Annie McConigley (nee McAteer) - died in 1936 in America

In her obituary it stated she was a native of Doaghbeg.  We don't have any other information.

Sarah McAteer (c. 1836-1913)

Apparently there was a Sarah McAteer from Doaghbeg who married John McAteer and resided in Gortnatraw South, Kerrykeel.  Not sure what family she was from.

They had the following children;

  • Catherine (1861)

  • Mary Margaret (1864-1900)

  • Patrick (1865)

  • Charles (1867)

  • Ellen (1869)

  • Mary (1871)

  • James (1873-1951)

  • Daniel (1876)

  • Sarah (1878-1953)

  • Annie (1879)

Bridget McAteer

Married John Sweeney from Clementstown.  Her father was Charles.  They had two sons - Daniel and Charlie born in the 1880s.

May be the same Bridget who was Jimmy Biddy Sweeney's grandmother.  If so, this was the first of her three marriages.  She had been married twice before.

She may also link to the below Edward McIntyre who was a son of Charles.  We can't figure out who he was either.

Edward McIntyre

Edward McIntyre died 1900 aged 27.  Son of Charles, death reported by his cousin John.

Nancy McAteer died 1898 aged 53. Widow, death reported by son Charles.

Mary Traynor - mystery solved!!

Patrick Coll from Doaghbeg/Pollaid had a sister Mary who moved to Pittsburgh in 1901 and married James Traynor.  They had 8 children.

She travelled home to Ireland while heavily pregnant.  She called by Liverpool to visit someone, the Traynor family always thought it was to visit her sister Bridget (Hughie Dan Coll's mother).  However the 'Dan' Family maintained Bridget never travelled to Liverpool.

Mary gave birth to a son at 93 Tiverton Street, Liverpool.  After some thorough investigation, this house belonged to the Gilmartins.

Anna Gilmartin (nee Sweeney, Doaghbeg) was a first cousin of Mary Traynor.  Anna's mother Bridget Coll and Mary's father Patrick were siblings.

Frank Sweeney - mystery solved!!

Among Maggie Doherty (nee Boyce)'s (1896-1978) belongings when she passed was a card sent by; Frank Sweeney, 1356 E 91st Street, Cleveland, Ohio.

Maggie's descendants assumed this Frank was from Maggie's husband Johnny's side, as Johnny's mother was Annabella Sweeney from Doaghbeg.

After some research we were able to find Frank's grave;

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/34937766/frank-sweeney

This grave record also gave details of his parents and his address, which confirmed he was the Frank we were looking for.

This led us to a birth record of a Francis Sweeney, born to Michael Sweeney & Anne McAteer in September 1852.  His godparents were Hugh & Bridget McAteer.

He also had a sister Margaret born in 1849.  Her godfather was Edward Boyce.

In all our research there was no Michael Sweeney from Doaghbeg in these times.

This is what made the connection.

Edward Boyce from Araheera was Maggie Doherty (nee Boyce)'s grandfather.  Edward was married to Mary Sweeney.

Our estimations are that Mary Boyce (nee Sweeney) and Michael Sweeney were brother and sister.

This means that Frank Sweeney was a first cousin of Edward Boyce's son Daniel (1853-1931).

Daniel was Maggie's father.
